Many so called green jobs have been around for years - you just didn't think of them as "green jobs."  Now that's not to say that there aren't many new types of jobs and careers being created by new industries such as Solar Power, Wind Power, Building Energy Management, etc. etc..

The questions below are what we've heard from our GreenJobs101.com visitors who took the time to ask us a question using the form on our home page. Q: Where's the best place to find a Green Collar Job?

Generally speaking you'll have to go where the jobs are being created. This means you'll need to live and work in a city where environmental consciousness is in the forefront of people's minds. A recent survey found the top 5 best cities for Green Jobs are as follows:

◊ New York City
◊ San Francisco
◊ Boston
◊ Detroit
◊ Portlan, OR

Q: What Is a Green-Collar Job?

A green job, also called a green-collar job is, according to the United Nations Environment Program , "work in agricultural, manufacturing, research and development (R&D), administrative, and service activities that contribute(s) substantially to preserving or restoring environmental quality. Specifically, but not exclusively, this includes jobs that help to protect ecosystems and biodiversity; reduce energy, materials, and water consumption through high efficiency strategies; de-carbonize the economy; and minimize or altogether avoid generation of all forms of waste and pollution."

Q: How Much Do Green Collar Jobs Pay?

How much a green collar job pays is really dependant on the type of job. The Green Jobs Guidebook published by the Environmental Defense Fund lists over 200 green job titles available in California and has details on 45 job types available to individuals with only a high school education, many paying over $25 per hour. It also describes 37 other job types available to individuals with a community college or trade school degree many paying over $40 per hour.
